WELCOME TO 5TH GRADE!!

June 3, 2011

Dear Students & Parents,

Hello! I am anxious to meet all of you, and I look forward to welcoming you to fifth grade in August! Fifth grade is a fun, academically challenging year full of responsibility. I anticipate a successful, positive year together for all of us.

Research and past experience indicate students are more successful if parents take an active part in their children’s education. Therefore, I am hopeful to have your full support for your children’s fifth grade experience. Together we can make a big difference in your children’s academic, social, and emotional growth in fifth grade. I’ll count on you from beginning to end.

Students will experience more success if they come in prepared to learn and confident in their abilities. I suggest your children master their multiplication-times tables before entering fifth grade. So much of the math content includes multiplication facts. It will be easier for students to grasp the new concepts if they do not have to labor with the times tables. In addition, I suggest students read throughout the summer at their reading level or just below their level. This will help maintain their vocabulary and fluency. Lastly, students need to write over the summer. They can keep a simple journal that includes entries about places they go, things they like, friends, family, etc. If they wrote a page a day a few times a week, it would build their writing skills and fluency, which will help them in fifth grade. We do a lot of writing in fifth grade and we’ll take the GA Fifth Grade Writing Assessment next spring.

Enjoy your summer! Practice your skills and come back with enthusiasm and a great attitude. Meet Your Teacher Day is scheduled for Wednesday, August 10, 1:00-3:00 p.m.

I can’t wait to meet you then!
Welcome to Fifth Grade!

Sincerely,

Tammy Hughes
